GUEST LECTURING AND HANDS-ON TUTORIALS

I am available as a guest lecturer on a variety of music technology related subjects. Currently I show up from time to time at Sound Training Production in Temple Bar, Dublin. I’ll be doing a series of lectures on using Ableton Live 9 for creative composition in January 2016. I’ve also recently been in there teaching about stereo microphone techniques as well as drum kit recording.

Previously I have given lectures and taught classes in Pulse Studios, Dublin and in the Sound Training Centre, Temple Bar. The subjects ranged in complexity, from basic recording technique to advanced mixing and production.

As many of the lecture topics require hands-on experience with certain pieces of hardware, I bring along the relevant toys so we can set them up, get things happening in real time, and see the benefits and pitfalls of the various pieces of equipment. Whenever possible I’ll use real-world examples as course material. For example, for the mixing lecture I would bring along mixes that have gone on to be succesfully released. For the Ableton Performance lecture I bring along the actual setup I use when touring.

SAMPLE LECTURES
GIGGING WITH ABLETON LIVE

Many bands these days have access to laptops, some kind of hardware sequencer or drum machine, and Ableton Live. This lecture talks about different approaches to using Ableton Live and popular drum synths like NI Maschine in a live setting.

  • Preparing your sounds
  • Preparing your outputs
  • Avoiding crashes
  • You as the master – clicks and tempos
  • You as the slave – MIDI sync, Ableton LINK
  • You as the slave – Beatmatching
  • Using Controllers Live – Push, Nocturn, Lauchpad, etc
  • Advanced Live performance looping with Ableton
  • Advanced MIDI Control and Remote Triggering
  • Lemur App for iOS

ADVANCED MIXING

How to mix to a professional standard, using your DAW of choice. The topics covered are designed to work regardless of the DAW, but point out some advantages of my favourite for mixing, Logic Pro 9.

  • Introduction – mix goals
  • Mix preparation 1 – setup room and speakers
  • Mix preparation 2 – setup your tracks and your “desk”
  • The first, second, and third hour of a session
  • The big 5: Compression, EQ, reverb, delay, distortion
  • Stereo image and soundstage
  • Adding interest, adding width
  • Master bus compression
  • Output formats, listening copies, stems and multis

DRUM PROGRAMMING WITH MASCHINE

A guide to programming beats with Native Instruments Maschine 2. I like to use Maschine within  Ableton Live for programming, then move to Logic Pro for mixing. This lecture covers the programming side.

  • Introduction – Maschine 2 software concepts
  • Maschine Groups in detail
  • Maschine Patterns & Scenes
  • Recording in the Maschine sequencer
  • Maschine Effects
  • Maschine setup in Ableton Live
  • Clips and Automation in Ableton Live
  • Beat construction strategies
  • Groove and Feel

Other topics I have prepared lectures for include: “Recording Acoustic Instruments“, “Stereo Mic Technique“, “Drum Kit Recording“, “Introduction To Recording“… plus I am happy to tailor content based on your needs and my experience. That’s how it usually goes! 😀
