I’ve just completed work on two songs with Lisa Loughrey, folk singer and writer.

I first met Lisa a few years ago when she and her band The Mariannes were checking out recording studios. I didn’t end up working with them then, but we kept in touch and when the time came for her to record some solo material, she called me up for the job. I would be recording, mixing, and co-producing the material with Nathan Maher, who you might know from the band Buffalo Sunn. Nathan had worked on the demos of a few songs, laying down drums, guitars, keys, working on the arrangements. The songs were already in excellent shape when they got me involved.

To get things going, along with bassist Damien McMahon, we all met in my production room for preproduction sessions – identifying tempo maps for the songs, tweaking the arrangements even further, and drafting the “sonic palette” we would be using. Lisa wanted to take these new songs into more cinematic territory, while still showing their origins in the folk & country worlds. I focused on investigating the recording and mixing techniques of the records she liked, the references we were aiming for, and then fused those with just a hint of a more modern and esoteric sound.

You can check out on the songs, “I Let Go”, in the video below.
