Simon is a composer, producer and arranger from Dublin city. He has played piano and keys with Sack and Dave Couse, and began recording pieces of his own with me around 2009. His works are a very different challenge recording- and mix-wise, featuring grand piano, string quartet, and the occasional female soprano! He writes for piano and string quartet mainly, but the resulting pieces sometimes go far beyond that in terms of instrumentation. Check out the excerpts from his latest work “Ryan V The White Star Line” in the TRACKLIST.

DESCRIPTION

Simon is a composer, producer and arranger from Dublin city. He has played piano and keys with Sack and Dave Couse, and began recording pieces of his own with me around 2009. He has a unique, distinctive piano style that moves between classical, jazz and contemporary styles. His works are a very different challenge recording- and mix-wise, featuring grand piano, string quartet, and the occasional female soprano!

He writes for piano and string quartet mainly, but the resulting pieces sometimes go far beyond that in terms of instrumentation. Drum machines, synths, sung vocals, rap, spoken word, soprano – all make appearances throughout his works. Check out the excerpts from his latest work “Ryan V The White Star Line” in the TRACKLIST.

Dear Dealer
Simon worked with Dublin poet Colm Keegan to set Colm’s poem “Dear Dealer” to music. An amazing if upsetting piece of work, it features an insistent piano motif cycling through a sequence of evolving chords with haunting, creepy synths layered on top. All of this frames Colm’s acidic letter to the Dublin underworld. We recorded the piano in Windmill Lane, Dublin, vocals in Karma Korner, and programmed and mixed the piece in Whitespace.

Crimson Gown
A dark tale of jealousy comes to life in this song recorded by myself in Karma Korner, Dublin. A vocals, piano, and strings piece, it features Briana Corrigan (The Beautiful South) and Fiach Moriarty on vocals. Right now I’m working on a new mix of this with Simon.

Simon also has several other finished pieces that we are currently in the process of remixing.

“Ryan V The White Star Line” is an epic piece of cinematic music inspired by the maritime law court case taken by Thomas Ryan against the White Star Line. Thomas’ son died on the Titanic and the case resulted in a landmark piece of legislation being enacted.
The piece is a modern classical piece with soprano Clare Kavanagh and Sack vocalist Martin McCann duetting. The string Quartet and vocals were recorded in Bay Studio, Wicklow. We recorded the piano in Windmill Lane, Dublin. Programming and mixing was done in Whitespace, Dublin.
